  1. Yes, the Republic of Ireland is "free". Both the US and Ireland are republics.  Northern Ireland, a part of the island that is the whole of Ireland, is still a part of the UK, but has it's own self-government.

The Republic of Ireland and The US have an interesting history of interaction, similar to that of the US and France when the American war of Independence was fought.

  2. Ireland is divided into two parts. The south known as the Republic is free. The north is free now but until recently was not as the IRA bombed it daily hoping to force the people there against their will to become tied to the Republic. However they fought for their freedom against these terrorists and are now living freely and proudly as part of the United kingdom. A few answers here shows the bitterness and jealousy of some extremists in the republic but most people in the Republic are decent law abiding kind people.

  3. yes the republic of ireland is a free country

  4. yes free from the UK.   =)

  5. Ireland is a free country and by the way Ireland is the correct and legal name for the country with the legal description of the Republic of Ireland.

Also Northern Ireland as part of the UK is also a free country.

The majority of people in the nation of Northern Ireland still prefer to be part of the UK, that may change in the future.

Northern Ireland used not to be free for every part of society but since the Good Friday agreement that has changed.

  6. Freedoms just a nother word for nothing left to louse

I was born in New York have lived 4 different states visited 22 spent 20 years in Ireland: I’d have to say Ireland was more free than the US has a higher standard of living now too.

Course there’s the 6 counties under British rule.

  7. Ireland isn't a country. It's an island. The Republic of Ireland has independence and therefore considered 'free'. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, does that make it free? God knows.

  8. yes it is . it is not part of the uk.

  9. I agree with De Burca. The concept of "freedom" is one which is bandied about in the US in a sort of smug, self congratulatory way because of the effect of years of accumulative propaganda usage of the concept.

What does it really mean to you?

  10. There are a variety of arguments which would say that the USA is no longer the free country it used to be, neo conservatives in the white house and the medias constant projecture of fear into the ordinary americans mind.

I guess you should define free in your question

  11. Nothing is free there, though it doesn't cost anything to visit the Cliffs of Moher last time I checked. ;-)

  12. Depends what you mean by free. The republic or Ireland is an independent country. Northern Ireland Is part of Great Britain. Just like the US, Ireland fought for independence from Great Britain. Only difference is we didnt need the French to help us ;).
