  1. do not give the irish a bad name

    Ooops, you are serious

    Have a nice day, Sophia

  2. No it isn't.  Drinking is popular, but no more than it is in other countries.

  3. Answer : consumption rates are high among Italian, Chinese, Greek, and Jewish Americans, but the incidence of drinking among these groups is very low. On the other hand, Abstention rates among the Irish are among the very highest in the Western world, but they experience a very high rate of drinking problems both in Ireland and the United States.

drinking itself is not the problem(moderation) , being drunk is the problem, so Ireland does have drinking problems , so yes .

<EDIT> it's not THE land  of drunks but it is A Land of drunks , Ireland isn't alone .

  4. NO!

  5. They drink about the same as the rest of Europe. It's just a trait that has been related to them over the years.

  6. well my whole dads side is irish.

    and they drink alot.

thats why im never going to drink.

  7. It depends on whether you are buying, or selling, I suppose

  8. I am 1/2 Irish and despise the taste of alcohol.

  9. I think both the irish, germans and mexicans can all get down with the best. haha.

But as a small town college student.. we get pretty pants shitttting drunk too :)

  10. Its a stereotype. And, well, stereotypes do contain at least a grain of truth! Erin Go Bragh!!

  11. i think its extremely over rated.

just cause you wear a green tshirt and like beer doesnt make you irish. too many poeple claim this and it bugs the **** out of me.

    SCOTLAND > ireland.

we invented kilts, and log tossing, you dirty thieves.

  12. *hiccup* Whot ru yersh..*hiccup* trying to say.. *hiccup*

That there is sum' thang*hiccup* wrong with that?

  13. LOL I had to click this when I saw it. I'm mostly Irish and I personally do not support drinking (or smoking) but I do know a lot of Irish people who drink a lot. I'm not sure whether Ireland is as they say.... maybe I'll take a trip there.... =]

  14. I'm having my am irish cofee yea!   Its my thing in my mid fifties and I don't drink really but ahhhhhhhhhhhh its good and a sat. ritual I love being part Irish I excuse my self.  Really if you watchthe Rick Steves shows a pub in Ireland is a family affair, mom dad kids grandparents and folk. They don't hide their brew and the lights aren't off.  Family first in Ireland a great land.  Ofcourse their are some people that abuse anything its called additiction.

  15. People are getting offended easily. For example, Im Irish and I dont drink but I know many who do and I did between the ages of 15 and 22. I also see the effects of these so called 'sessions' when it all goes wrong but thats just personal opinion and experience.

Statistically we are a nation of drinkers. A h**l of a lot of Irish people would fail the AA test and we are 2nd in the binge drinking leagues, England being the winners. Were 3rd overall for alcohol consumption behind the Germans and the Polish.

The difference is the English binge drink more but dont drink as much in between these sessions. The Germans drink more daily but dont binge as much. The Polish dont consume as much liquid but drink far more spirits than the Irish do.

Do we drink too much as a nation? Yes. Do we drink in an unhealthy manner as a nation? Yes. Are we the worst? No.

  16. The Irish have that stereotype attached to them yes, its legal in England to drink when you are 18. We have a huge problem over here.

  17. if your irish, you have never been there. 14? h**l NO! its a matter of individuality! i hate it when people say that all or most of a race does this or that! and no, it is not viewed as a country of drunks.

  18. I live in waterford and I dont think we're all drunks.......but we like an odd binge drinking session....lol

Especially when Waterford win the All Ireland......ahhhhwoooohoooo

  19. Ireland is known in some quarters as 'The Emerald Isle' due to its gorgeous green lands.

I Love the Irish people. The mythology of Ireland is wonderful.

Yes, they do have a drinking reputation, but usually the drinking denotes social/jolly good times.

With the prolific war torn image that is portrayed & that people must have to live with on a daily basis, if I lived there under that type of pressure, I'd probably drink heavily too, just to brighten things up, put the more serious things to the back of the mind for a while.

  20. Well, I am of Irish-German extraction, and my father's side (Irish) drinks just as much as the German side - in fact less so, in many respects. But then again there is a "tradition" of drinking in Germany too so perhaps it's not the best comparison.

By that math however, I should be a doubled-over drunk, but in fact I don't drink at all, and really never have.

I think it's a question of reputation, the idiot who's carrying on and wearing a big foam shamrock on March 17th or so, and making a general embarrassment of themselves - of course represents a caricature and an embarrassment to an extent, but no more so than any other celebrants at a football (soccer or American football) game or much else.

That said, part of it is racism, flat out, just like the sayings that all Irishmen are drunks, Mexicans are lazy, Blacks are less intelligent, Japanese are sneaky, Arabs are terrorists, Jews are conspiratorial, Australians or Southerners from the US are all bumpkins, that Germans are closeted n**i's and all Russians are whatever Russians are alleged to be in racist circles.

If you go through life thinking that way, you'll forever find that upon inspection.....not everything is as it seems. It's a false flag and almost totally without merit.

I say almost, because it's worth knowing these stereotypes so as not to offend.

But the height of our species might well enough, just be to put a GIANT sign on the Moon reminding us that all people suck. Looking at life that way doesn't give alot of options and people - ALL PEOPLE - tend to be alot more interesting when we stop putting labels on each other.

Certainly there are racists, certainly there are hateful people, who just either don't care or don't know any better. But if anything I've found that Prof. Einstein's observation about intelligence is correct.

I'm sure I'm "misremembering" the quote but it goes something like this "Genius has it's limits....I'm not so sure about stupidity."

  21. the Irish is fun loving people that love having a good time. Nothing wrong with that. They are dedicated and very family orientated. Irish have great qualities and great history, not to mention a beautiful country.

  22. It is a mistake to stereotype national characteristics. The variation amongst the population is too large. Whilst it may be true that drinking is a national pass time in Ireland (and other places too) what makes you think that everyone who drinks gets drunk? In any case, the majority of Ireland's drinkers probably can't afford that much alcohol nor would they desire to be drunk if they could.

  23. they should still stick to 18 yr of age legally...but guess irish can just take the liquor more than anyone else so guess its like drinking soda to them...but irish ppl are kool-though im not irish lol, so i don't rlly see anything wrong
