As the ***** have eaten EVERYTHING I've planted so far. On the one hand I don't like lkilling anything, but on the other hand I'm not going to have any fresh veg at all if I don't do something.

  1. No, you should look up some all natural garden pest control recipes online or in books. These will keep then away without violently killing them

  2. No! Dont kill anything... geez with morals as a vegan would have you should be able to answer that one for yourself

  3. ask your great god if you can temporarily change to a carnivore for the day, kill them and change back to vegan the next ?

  4. No, I think it's wrong to kill slugs, they are still living creatures so it can not be right. There are lots of humane solutions to slugs and snails:

    1. The barrier method involves surrounding your plants with a good layer of sand, broken egg shell or soot. These are either too dry or too scratchy for slugs to be happy to cross.

    2. For seedlings and very small plants, cut the top and bottom off a plastic bottle. Then press the bottle into the soil to surround the plant/seedling. If you've got a few plants/seedlings, cover each one in the same way, with a bottle.

    3. Or for larger areas, use semi-rigid plastic sheeting buried on it's edge, 4 inches deep and 8 inches above ground to surround the plants.

You could also try planting a hedge of sage around your plants as slugs and snails do not like sage.

Personally If I find them in my garden I just move them to the back of the garden. Yes, they may eat some plants but then everyone needs to eat. And there are plenty of plants that they do not touch, it's just trial and error.

  5. Ethically it's never ok to waste good beer. Just use salt on the slugs, it works better.

  6. It's up to you to decide what is ok and what is not.  You can't really allow slugs to eat your plants or ants to ruin your garden ect, the way to think about it is that what is your care worth if you end up dying by letting all creatures take over because you care about them, then you will end up dying hungry or bitten by something.

  7. Just give them beer, they will die happy. Not killing insects that are distroying your food is carrying veganism to far.

Beer is better then coffee if your concerned about cruelty. They die happy in beer, but the acid in the coffee grounds burns through their shell.

BTW: when you mow your lawn your killing thousnads of insects. Just walking accrost the lawn kills them.

  8. vegans can't even eat honey because it exploits bees apparently so drowning slugs in alcohol isn't an option.

  9. Maybe change to vegetarian and kill them anyway.

  10. Human hair or egg shells is still harming them, cuts up their bellies.

    It's your call, dude.

  11. No, because as a vegan you reject anything that harms animals and beer isn't vegan. You wouldn't put out a trap to drown kittens if they ate you plants so I don't think that because a slug isn't cute it should suffer. To get rid of them without causing them harm you could just buy some cheap copper wire and put it  around the bases of the plants on the soil. Slugs hate it so they won't cross over it and eat the plants.Hope this helps:-)

  12. Vegan here and I wouldn't dream of it. Slugs may be small so they seem insignificant, but I believe a vegan should see all animals as having equal rights. If killing slugs doesn't seem like a big deal to you, try to imagine it's not slugs but instead raccoons that are eating your veg.

    Please, don't kill them. :(

Also, the egg shell thing isn't going to be a vegan option either.

1.are you supposed to get egg shells?

2.using eggshells is essentially the use of animals so I wouldn't do it.

  13. yes I suppose it is up to you, you could leave them out for the birds so that they do not go to waste, a natural way to kill them is leave out human hair, they can't cross it as their skin sticks to it and they die chemical free

  14. Nope vegans are not allowed too kill but you could get a mate and not watch or but hair there or copper tape or just put your plants in a green house to stop the "slugs" from killing your vegetables

    Hope it helps

  15. Recent tests indicated that eggshells and copper deter slugs.

A garden border of recycled copper tube and/or crushed eggshells (but ye're a Vegan innit!) should keep the pests away from your veggies.

Also, switch to ground coffee, as opposed to instant (much nicer anyway) and dig the used coffee grounds into your garden (cos slugs also burrow)

I don't have a problem cos I have a resident hedgehog family. They nosh the slugs with gusto! (and very noisily!) I manage to keep the Hungry Horaces in my garden by occasional treats of catfood.......... but not too much, else they roll over and go to sleep!

    edit:

Hairy bits DO NOT work. Ashes do.

  16. my mom uses the beer trick it works. if you made the pan shallow enough it wouldn't drown them and you would have to catch them at night since they hide during the day.. but what would you do with them if you caught them? keep it as a pet? feed it to chickens/snakes?  I suppose the best thing is prevention. They don't like to travel over rough places so gravel, egg shells, roofing shingles will help keep them out.

  17. no, dont think so.

  18. Your choice whether or not to kill them.  But why not eat them afterward?  I see all those cows ruining our meadows by eating the grass.  They have to be killed - copper tape and human hair doesn't always work with cows.  Not to eat great big sizzling steaks afterward would be an insult both to the cows and their slug chums.

  19. Some websites suggest egg shell or milk, they may be natural pest control alternatives, but they aren't vegan. I usually go through the garden in the evening and physically remove the slugs and place them away from my herbs and veggies. Or you could try physical barriers, they can be bought online or in some gardening stores.

The Flowerfortress - a round potholder that is an "effective slug and snail barrier" for outdoor pot plants. Available mail order from Ladybird garden Essentials, Ladybird House.

Slug it Out - protective recycled plastic ring that sits around seedlings or plants, its sloping sides and over-lapping lip keep slugs at bay. Available from The Natural Collection, www.naturalcollection.com

The vegan society has some options for humane pest control. http://www.vegansociety.com/people/lifes...

  20. No, Vegans must not even HANDLE beer. Use water like a good freak of nature.

  21. You slug problem, sounds a lot like my roach problem. If you are concerned about ethics, then I would say this one has to be entirely up to you. I decided to battle the h**l out of my problem.

The way I see it, is you need to pick and choose by what feels right. Ask yourself about how many ants you step on when you sit on the grass? Or germs you drown when you wash your hands? You can't entirely place yourself in a bubble, it defeats the purpose of being a living example of a comfortable cruelty free lifestyle.  Plus, how do people think their organic produce gets to make it to the grocer? Did the farmer plot ways to distract the slugs and other critters in a tactful way with major confliction? Probably not. Final word, when you think about what to do- do what your first thought says.

  22. Slugs are one thing - but did you know finings (from fish) are often used in the brewing process??

  23. if you are vegan then you don't believe in the killing of any creature hence why not to eat anything from an animal so why kill of something you are against? this is beyond me this question but your garden and your life, but why not have a bite of a bacon sandwich whiles at it?

  24. This should be a lesson to all you ethical purists out there.  Sometimes there are others that will want to take what you have and you have to do what is necessary to stop them.  I say drown the little buggers.

  25. You can use other ways to stop the slugs like using copper tape they don't like crawling over it, you can sprinkly egg shells around your plants, You can put old hair around your plants etc. There are other ones as well but you might have to look them up. I remember someone said they don't like coal, coffee and that furry stuff that gets caught up in your tumble drier filter.

  26. You're calling Slugs - I thought you cared for all Animals?

  27. no, it's not. but i understand where you're coming from.

try looking up what can be used to get rid of those pesky slugs. choose a safer method.
