I'm 13 turning 14 this summer and i was thinking of getting a part-time job during the holidays. I live in Toronto...so it is legal for me to get a part-time job?

If so...what kind of places can i work at? And i'm not talking about volunteer work...i mean actual part-time jobs where i can earn minimum wage? Thanks.

  1. I'm just west of you in Canada, and when I was 14 I had a sweet job cutting the grass for an Optimist club-mate of my Dad's when he went on vacation for 6 weeks.  I had to go over every 3 days, and cut it in a certain pattern (anal old-f**t) but he paid me well and gave me a great bonus too.  It took me about 90 minutes, and I just listened to my walkman while I worked (that's what we had before mp3 players, lol).

If your parents own a lawnmower, you could make out flyers and deliver them to the houses in your neighbourhood that have lawns.

Be reasonably priced, have the flyer be catchy and cute, and let them know you are a high school student who can't legally get a job yet, but you are willing and able to work.  If you plan to go to university, put that on the flyer too ("growing my secondary-education fund").

You could also add at the bottom that you can also collect mail and feed/walk pets for vacationing homeowners.

And if your parents have friends in the neighbourhood, ask if they would be willing to give a reference as to your responsible nature and enterprising attitude.  Then you could add "references available upon request".

People would love to give their money to an enterprising kid with ambition, trust me!

  2. lucky for you i am 15 and happen to live in detroit, try golf courses (a caddy) thats the best thing i found, you can find jobs other places that will pay you under the table but they are hard to find so just go to a local gaolf course and ask at the desk about caddying for a summer time job which i assume is what you are looking for

  3. in Louisiana yes you can at places like dominos or supermarket  ... but it really all depends on where you live

  4. At winndixe and publix

  5. wish i knew i have the same situation

i live in VA in the US though

child labor laws say i cant work until im 16

    =[

  6. my daughter is 15 1/2 in phoenix no luck finding a real job yet

    deliever papers

  8. Work at DQ! my cousin worked there when he was 14! oR you can babysit, like I do! It gives me a lot of cash for the Summer!

  9. well i don't know about Canada but in the US legal age is 14 you might be able to find a job at a community store, at an animal shelter, or start your own business selling some of your old things, or running errands for your neighbors .

  10. y innit not possible?

as long as its cos of choice n not force..

work at a small shop sellin odd things

  11. In SC u can get a got cleanin places up at 14

  12. oh wow maybe, but im not sure, i think 15 is ur best chance, but babysitting can be part time too =]

if you want a better job, maybe ask around your family or friend's family

they might have something in store for you and willing to pay

  13. It is not question of legal or not, you will need a Social Insurance Number to be on the payroll of any company, as you will need to pay deductions on the money you earn and can get most of it back when filing an income tax return, I worked when I was your age, but that was back in the 1970's, I am probably older than your parents.

Paper route are fine but not just a summer thing, check with the Metro Parks board, a counsellor or attendant in there system might be o.k, cutting grass is not something you want to do it is to hot and sticky, as for the grocery store the US people suggested, they are unionized and are not as open to people under 16, mainly because of the hours and other work restrictions, check with the HRDC student office in your area and see what they can do, they have day and week based work, but first get your SIN as you need that first, they application at the HRDC office, it costs $12.00 and it your for the rest of your life, and you will need it after your finished school and when older and want to work the whole summer in high school.

  14. It really depends on what places.  Don't waste your time with places that sell expensive things, like electronic stores or anything like that (also stray away from applying at big corporations, most of them make you wait until you've reached the 16 year mark.

Try places that are family owned like small shops and boutiques.  Also, ask around to friends and family, even if you work under the table for one of them (at least it's work experience . . .oh yeah and money!)

  15. Be a paper boy/girl my friend started at 13 he earns about 1000 dollars per 3 month. not bad i guess but its really hard. wake very early, carry all the paper and basically go to every house and drop a newspaper (yes it means going up to those stairs too.) Yes this job is in Toronto, it was introduced to us about in grade 6, too bad i was being a moron back then and not taking the job. Beware though your money goes to your parents because you don't have the right yet.

Babysitting make sure it ain't any of you parent's friends or your friend's siblings because they will bargain you too death. Trust me on this it happened on me not good. You get a little money and not satisfied you to go anywhere like Wonderland.

Under the table ain't bad either but be careful. You have no experience and whatever happens to you, is your own problem. Not 100% on this one.

Some fast food takes 14 years old as well. Well i know this girl who got in because she has contacts in the inside.

Another thing creating a website can help as well. I read this article from my Business Book in my Business Class. I read how this girl created her own website and has been hired to a big company. Beware you must be good at computers and all of the thins about Business.
