I would like an extended stay and it sounds like the hotels are expensive. I am 60 and have never stayed in a hostel, do not know anything about them. I would not sleep well with other people in the same room.

  1. some hostels have dormer rooms where you would be sleeping with other people...but there are a lot that will have single rooms! and you will get a hostel for a much lower price than a hotel...i definatly think if you are planning on staying that long that you go for the cheaper option! it can be so expensive! Ive only ever stayed in a hostel once in dublin a good few years ago, i was with a few friends, so we all stayed together! it was fine!

have a look at this hostel website - it will give you a rough idea on costings, just change the location to check different counties

  2. Renting an apartment is a wonderful way to see Europe or anywhere else, in fact.  If you aren't in a big hurry, you could do the house exchange. But the apartment rentals are a fine way to go.  You can use the web to find such rentals, and also check with the Ireland tourist offices.  Go to the library, and peruse the books on rentals, and travel books on Ireland. There is so much available, so you should have no trouble.

Living with a family (a room) is fine, too. They do that all over Europe...in Germany, etc. they are called Pensions, and Bed and Breakfasts...not like our expensive ones here. Just living in with a family, but you have your own private space. You share nothing.  I love the cheap rentals in others homes...it is a great way to get to know the real country.

  3. I've been to Galway, Ireland.

    <3ed it.

    I really wanna go again.

    We stayed at Bed&Breakfasts.

I'm pretty sure you can find one of those.

An apartment for just 30 - 60 days seems like a lotta money for a short time.

But that seems most reasonable compared to what you would have to pay at an apartment.
