domestic cars almost always have their gas caps on the left side (driver's side), and foreign cars almost always have their gas caps on the right side (passenger's side)?

I know that there are some exceptions, like my husband's 97 Dodge Intrepid has its gas cap on the right side, and today I saw a Toyota Camry with its gas cap on the left. But it seems to be a general rule? Why is that?

  1. Because in foreign countries drivers drive on the left side of the roadway. In the USA we drive on the right.

  2. for safety reasons the gas cap is located  on the opposite side of the exhaust pipe and its heat

  3. I have a Ford Mustang, and the gas cap is on the passenger's side.....

    maybe it's just a coincidence

  4. I've driven a Plymouth Sundance, Ford T-Bird, Dodge Intrepid, Ford Taurus, and now a Dodge Caravan, the caravan is the only on with the gas cap on the drivers side.

  5. I'm not sure if there is a reason for it, but every Toyota, Honda and Mazda I've ever owned had the gas cap on the left side.  I really think it's just a European thing to have it on the right side.  My BMW had one on the right side, a friend of mine the same thing.

I think it should always be on the driver's side, so you have less guesswork on where to park and you don't have to walk around your car.

  6. My Neon has its filler on the right, Camry on the left, Ranger left, Caravan left.  I've never noticed a pattern.

  7. NOPE.

My Civic has it on the left.  My Audi has it on the right.

    Both are imports.

    Good Luck...
