I remember hearing this so many years ago on a trip to a museum that had alligators. I have heard many other people mention it too. Is this true?

  1. The shortest distance between point  A and point B is a straight line.....

  2. I used to live in Florida, and I learned that alligators are usually more afraid of humans than we are of them.  However, if you come across a mother protecting a nest or an aggressive bull during breeding season, they can be very territorial and dangerous.

I was taught that if you ever encounter a situation where an alligator is chasing you on land, you don't run in a straight line.  They can move VERY fast on land and can outrun a human.  However, the way their brains function does not allow for them to anticipate irratic movement, and this is the suggested way to get away from them.

If an alligator were to chase you, they would not do so for a very long time - like they wouldn't chase you across a large field.  If you can get out of their territory, you're fine.

  3. Alligators & Crocodiles are ambush predators, even protecting a nest or territory they wouldn't bother to chase you more than thirty feet. In that distance you'd be better off just sprinting until your out of it's 'I care' zone.

Be more worried about lunges from the water or within ten feet of them, them chasing you would be the least likely scenario.

  4. Maybe if you run really really fast. They say that because Alligators and Crocodiles can't turn fast on land, but they can run at speeds of 30mph for short distances so they could just run in a straight line and catch you as you zigged back.

  5. not zig zag but turning

    they can't turn fast
