Question:

Is it, technically (as in, in terms of the rules) possible for a girl to be in the NBA?

Of course NBA= National Basketball Association. I was just curious, because women have the "WNBA" which is WOMEN'S national basketball association, which clearly states that only women would be allowed, and no men, but NBA doesn't imply that at all....

Thanks in advance, guys =)

  1. i would assume so, which is why they created the WNBA

  2. Just reported the first answerer, what a rude guy.

It's is not possible for a women by gender to be in the NBA.

That's the reason they created the WNBA.

  3. Ann Meyers of UCLA tried out for the Pacers once upon a time. She didn't get past rookie camp, but I recall a coach saying, "She wasn't the worst player out there."

If you are good enough, you'll be allowed to play.

  4. WNBA was "officially approved by the NBA Board of Governors on April 24, 1996." "The WNBA is the only league to receive full backing of the NBA."

Just the fact that it was created by the NBA implies that the NBA is restricted to men. Otherwise, why create a women's league?

  5. no idea. but i think a lot of women bball players want to be in WNBA, just cuse their more accepted there. dont think ive ever heard a woman saying that her dream is to play in the NBA.

  6. sexual discrimination would be the case if they did not let you be in the NBA.

  7. What up Kathleen,

Techinically speaking there is nothing in the NBA rulebook that suggests that a woman could not be on an NBA team.  Although i think it would open up a can of worms that the NBA would have to address.  This player would be very difficult to officiate- and the league would have to worry about the issue of sexual harassment, etc.

i think the creation of the WNBA draws a line- though it is a very implied line- and techinically in the rulebooks there is nothing stated which means it would have to be allowed- otherwise it may be deemd as discrimination.

i can tell you that as someone who has played basketball in different leagues, etc. it would be very uncomfortable to play against woman-- just simply because basketball is a contact sport and it's kind of a catch-22 for men- you don't want to be too physical and you don't want to not play your best either.

So techinically nothing in the rulebook- but i don't think it is an issue that the NBA has thought to address- and should that situation ever arise- we could see some more explicitness in the rulebook.
