There is no federal law that makes it a crime to bet on sports with an offshore betting site.  The law that you're probably thinking of is the UIGEA act which was snuck into a Port Security bill passed in late 2006.  The law is aimed at banks and how they transact with gambling sites, NOT players.  However, the law is so loosely definied, there is NO means of enforcement in its current state.

Bodog is one of the safer sites out there.  But as far as betting lines (pointspreads and moneylines) you will likely find better odds at other reliable sites. It is legal to use bodog, although there are definitely better sportbooks out there. I myself, along with many others prefer to play here http://www.intertops.com/sportsbook/cgi-...

and they also give you good bonuses and free bets, so it pays to use them.

Bodog has went way downhill in the past few years in my opinion. Not necessarily all their fault.

The UIGEA hurt a lot of sportsbooks though
