Martial artists always seem to preach against agression and go on about using other peoples agression against them, but, in a real fight, could this ever work or is it just best to let anger consume you?

  1. It depends what type of person you are, and who you want to fight.

  2. yes because if you're really annoyed you usually make lots of mistakes but if you're calm you can smile or laugh at the person you're fighting and this will make him really angry which will make him do mistakes and you can get a kick out of it (pun not intended)

  3. I am not a fan of street fights ever unless your in danger serious b\danger but in MMA kickboxing boxing whatever ya stay calm when you get mad nervous scared whatever your heart rate jumps and your head is all scrambeled your thinking you have to get angry and kill someone when if you look at guys like fedor randy couture chuck liddell any of them there not angry and there the best in the world anger is always a bad idea you get mad youstart swining and your not thinking

  4. you better practice muay tai.then you may get to know what is calm in a fight.

  5. Physically and legally, Yes, it is better to keep calm while defending yourself. You have to make the distinction between a real confrontational fight between two angry men and a self defense situation where one attacks another person unprovoked. By keeping calm, you are less likely to make mistakes that might lead to serious injury or death, since your goal is merely to escape harm and get out of the violent situation intact. In a real confrontational fight between two hotheads, anger is usually the fuel that pushes both men to escalate into more violence and the one who keeps a cooler head is less likely to do something he's gonna regret for the rest of his life.

  6. Have any of the others on here ever been in a fight??

its a nasty raw dirty thing that just consumes your very being for what seems like an eternity... so anyone who tells you to stay calm has never been on the ground being kicked or had 2 or more guys pushing you..

take my advice... hit first ask questions later!!

try looking up a guy called geoff thompson on the web and he will tell you how it is and how to keep yourself safe

  7. I suppose I fall under the martial artist preaching against agression catagory

I tried to find a quote from a book but it was taking too long.

at any rate a calm mind allows you to think and react better which gives you a strategic advantage against someone who is in a blind rage just wailing away. you'll be able to see what is going on and beable to come up with a solution to the problem

  8. It depends who you are fighting. If the person will get a kick out of you getting angry at them then you should just keep calm and let them get angry at you, then you can walk away easily. I do karate and personally I would say that if you are fighting physically then you should do whatever you can to get away as quickly as you can, otherwise there's a chance you could get seriously hurt. If it is a verbal arguement definatly stay calm while the other person gets stressed.

  9. vengeance is a dish best served up or eaten cold.

FIRE in the spirit ICE in the mind.

CALM IS NOT THE CORRECT WORD .The martial art way is not to use his technique against him (another mis quote) but to use his aggression against him which isn't quite the same thing.

The ultimate is not to fight just below that is the skill to take control immediately and maintain it.The longer a conflict goes on the higher your risk of losing becomes.

  10. Relatively calm, yes. Aggressive is also a must. Don't rush, wait for opportunity or create opportunity, take the opportunity when you see an opening, without hesitation, and move in for the knockout. Must have an attitude of knocking your opponent out. Once engaged, let all your aggression out, because who is mentally stronger will most likely to be the victor (if everything else are equal)

  11. it depends, if you can overpower them with a berzerker rage than that's cool, but then your left open to get caught in something alot easier. and vice versa.

  12. When All Around people are Losing Their Heads,You Must Keep Yours.

Of Course It Is Better To Stay Calm.

If You Lose YOUR Head,You Lose Your Fight!

Why Do You Want To Fight Anyway?

  13. It's actually better if you can work around the fight or walk away in the first place.

  14. I don't know about calm, but definitely CONTROLLED. Loss of control of your emotions translates DIRECTLY to loss of control of your attack/defense. If you allow yourself to be, as you say, "consumed" by your anger, then you make yourself less effective, particularly if you are in a confrontation against someone who IS controlled. You could possibly get lucky and land a good blow, but the more likely scenario is that you will flail wildly, land ineffective attacks (if you land any at all), and end up putting yourself in a disadvantageous position to allow your opponent to end the fight quickly and rather decisively. If you are fighting against someone who is able to control their anger/aggression, and you go buck wild, then they can simply sit back, avoid/deflect your attacks, and wait for you to exhaust yourself; then they have the upper hand in deciding if the fight continues (and then quickly ending it), or if they simply laugh at you and walk away. Uncontrolled anger and aggression will only carry you so far; eventually it will wear you down and likely lead to defeat. BUT, if you can keep your aggression in check, you can utilize the energy more effeciently to your advantage.

  15. Yes.  Squeeeeeze the trigger, don't jerk it.

  16. its always better to be calm. sometimes you can actually over-pursue in fights

  17. Not really calm but focused. When people get in fights their aggression soars and they become overtaken by it, usually forgetting key elements such as the best offense is a great defense or what have you. I think being focused is a better word then calm you want to be in the moment, yet not super relaxed that your reflexes are hindered.

  18. Just go berserk. What works in the dojo doesn't work on the streets

  19. in a controlled fight stay calm

in a street fight or brawl usually just be vicious and hold nothing back at all

in a street fight the most vicious usually wins

  20. There is an old saying in the martial arts..."when you let your anger out keep your fists in, when you let your fists out keep your anger in".

Fighting out of anger makes your techniques sloppy.

  21. Look at Fedor, the calmest fighter you will ever see. It helps to be relax. Not go all out and gas. It's a technique that everyone should have. I need to work out on my own.

Remember training is 80% physical, 20% mental. When you step in the ring or cage, it's 20% physical, 80% mental.

  22. If your emotions played a part in a violent exchange, you were not trained properly.

Martial arts teaches your instincts to react.

There is no time to think about whether you are going to get angry or cry like a girl.

If that is your question, you wasted your money and whatever years of training.

That's just NOT how it works!!!

  23. Mostly best to keep calm. when your angry you make rash and often the wrong decision or move. if your calm if can anger your opponant even more, and because you're thinking clearer as a result you will have a better position to react to your oponant and plan your move.

  24. to a degree. agression in the form of anger etc is not going to help if u've picked a fight with somebody that is better in shape than you, so be smarter.

firstly if the other guy is fighting in anger or what evr they will tend to throw their weight around a lot and u can use that to off balance them by simpley moving out of the way or tripping then they are more open to various 'locks'.

secondly, although fighting isnt rocket science the adrenaline and perhaps initial shock off some1 ACTUALLY attacking u may cloud the mind. u need to regroup ur thoughts and see clearly where the openings/opportunities are.

the key is to learn how to switch the agression on and off at the right time and keep control of it else u might get off balanced urself.

  25. If you are well trained than anger that evolves to uncontrolled rage will make you lose your critical faculty. This has been well studied in fighter pilots. Fear and rage cause more dog fights to be lost than even inferior aircraft. The reason is in the heat of battle you need to rely on your best judgment from each fraction of a second to the next. Controlled excitement is a different animal and can heighten the senses and release endorphins to reduce pain and bleeding. Rage does this as well; however you lose the ability to use your training. My "real fight" personal experience is limited, but in the fights I have been involved in it went to the favor of the one in control of his self. In sparring I have won every match where the opponent lost his temper. They noticeably lost control of everything they had ever learned.

  26. They know what they're talking about.

Emotions tend to disrupt one's way of thinking. It's silly to be led by anger and rely on brute force alone. It doesn't even just apply to fighting. With anything in general, keeping calm will allow you to view your options, and asses your problems with the most ease and efficiency to gain the upper hand.

Think about it this way, what idiot play chess without planning his moves? What moron fights another person who's keeps a gun? All the same answer, a reckless idiot.

  27. Well first off its best not to fight and work your way out of it if you can.

If you are talking tournament or no choice, yes you should always keep you cool and remain not calm but on wits end with every part of your senses attuned to what is happening.

Awareness and using your brains and keeping your cool are usually the biggest key factors. If you lose any of them you now are easier to be hit or hurt.
