Is it Boy or ateil?

Ok according to what the sites say a white faced cokateil boy has a white face. And fermales have a barred tail. My bird has a white face after his/her first molt and a white barred rump. Can anybody tell me if Pearl is a boy or ?

  1. A male tiel will lose ALL body barring after the first molt and will have solid colors.  Here is a link to show you how to check under the wings for spots which can also help determine what s*x your bird is.  A white barred rump sounds like a female.

  2. The fact that your bird changed after molting, indicates that it is a male.   All juveniles have female markings.  If the markings changed after molting - it's a male.

    If Pearl is a whiteface pearl, he may in fact have a pattern on his rump.  Don't look at his rump - look at the underside of the longest tail feathers, facing the bird.  Females have barring/horizontal stripes across the feather.  Some mutations are obvious, others are very faint.     Males may have a mutation-related pattern, but not actual barring.

    In addition, if Pearl is a pearl, he will lose most, if not all of the pearl pattern as he ages, gradually with each molt.

    If you look at this picture, it shows a whiteface pearl male, after the first molt.
