Is it Hard for Older Woman to Find Job?

Question

I did mainly low level clerical work for years (data entry and such). Never made more than $21,000 a year. I am 64 and have been retired for 2 years. My counselor is telling me that I should be able to find a job that pays the $30,000 a year I would need to live on if I left my husband. (Neither of us has much in the way of a pension.) Is that realistic?

Yes! I think so, for some reason or the other employers love to have young woman around. I think your counselor is drinking under the cover.May God help you.

Advise you get out there and apply for temporary work through agencies - there's a glut of people out there, but some businesses do hire mature workers because they are reliable, settled, and don't spend half the day on the phone with boyfriends.  The salary your counselor says may be a little optimistic, but nothing is impossible, and with more experience under your belt and more skills, it is not unrealistic.  Pick up some more computer skills, everyone needs them now.  And consider getting a laptop computer with all the software of Microsoft Office professional - learn as much as you can.  the laptop would be an investment for work and cost is much more reasonable now.

by the by, young usually means lower salary - a returning mature adult would be even more valuable than just the low salary

Yes, it is! I am 52 and was out of work for over 2 years and I have a college degree! Age discrimination is alive and well, don't let anyone kid you, it is real!

I have a friend who just turned 62 and has an incredible work history and can't get a job no matter what she applies for.

I have a job now, but it's nothing like what I want or am trained to do and I apply for jobs all the time and can't even get an interview. I am so frustrated. I want to move from where I am at to another state but can't get any kind of job!
