Question:

Is it Illegal to give these the rabies vaccine to my horse?

I'm starting to do my own vaccines to save money. Yes, I am experienced with giving my horses shots, my vet showed me how. I am wondering if it is legal to give my horse the rabies vaccine myself or if that has to be administered by a vet. On Jeffers they say it's illegal to ship it to OR but they may not be up to date on the current laws. I'm not looking to get my horses qualified to travel between states or go to shows or anything, I'm just trying to keep them healthy.

  1. It has to be administered by a vet.

  2. It has to be administered by a DQP....designated, qualified person....either a vet or vet tech authorized by the veterinarian to administer the shot....This information is required by the government.

Again, the vaccine manufacturer, the lot number, the expiration date, the date administered and the signature of the person administering the vaccine.

This link explains it in further detail.

Many different states require proof of various vaccinations and rabies is one of them...it depends on where(which state) you're traveling....a negative coggins test is mandatory in all states and you'll have to provide proof of this.  (a signed statement by your veterinarian).   Also many horse shows now require proof of vaccination

  3. because you have to have proof of your horses current rabies shots to go shows and do other things, it must be adminstered by a vet.

  4. I heard that it is illegal in some states but am not positive. I would talk to your vet and see what he knows. You might be able to buy the vaccines from him instead of Jeffers. I did that for the second strangles shot that my horse needed. It might not be as cheap buying directly from the vet but it would cut out the price of the farm visit.

  5. Jeffers,  use  to ship the rabies vaccines  to all states.  But  they only ship to a handful states  now.. I use  to give  my horses  their  shots.  I still give  them everything  except  the West Nile,  and  the Rabies, which  in most states, are now required  by law  to be done  by a vet. Sorry...

  6. For the well being of your horse, would you think it is best for it to be legal for you to do your own injections, or is there a viable reason for a database of such injections in order to protect the majority?

I'm an RN who has problems with a lot of the do-it-yourself brand of horse management, and would like to raise the awareness of how this impacts the population of horses as a whole.  That's why I responded this way.  If you really want to keep your horse healthy, you'll think about my question.

  7. Vaccines require a prescription from a vet to be purchased and must be administered by a vet.  Neither Jeffers or any other supplier can legally ship vaccines to you without a physician's prescription.  If you obtain them any other way, obviously, this would be an illegal drug purchase.  I would never purchase anything in this manner as it could be contaminated or out dated, not to mention the legal ramifications.  I would urge caution in what you are attempting for the good of your horses.  You said your vet showed you how to give injections, but did he say he would write scripts for you to get your own vaccines???  If so, good luck.  Regardless of whether it is illegal to GIVE the injection as a non-physician, no one is going to police your barn to see if you do your own shots.  Every knowledgeable horse owner I know, knows how to give their horse an injection either IV or IM.   My vet supplies me with syringes, bute, ace, banamine, etc. to keep on hand in the barn.  Be safe.

  8. Rabies must be given by a licensed veterinarian.  Any other vaccine you can give but that is the only one that is a law i believe everywhere.
