What is the balanced chemical equation and what type of reaction is occur in this case:

Wet a piece of pH paper with distilled water and hold it over (not touching) an open bottle of concentrated ammonia hydroxide.

  1. it should give NH3 + 2H20.  THE pH PAPER BECOMES blue


  2. Ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) emits ammonia gas (NH3).  When the gas hits the pH paper it gets absorbed in the distilled water and then  forms ammonium hydroxide again.  This will turn the pH paper to the basic color.

    Equations:

    NH4OH --> NH3(g) + H2O

    The reverse happens at the pH paper:

    NH3(g) + H2O ---> NH4OH
