(My english is not that good) I'm renting a house with my brother and 2 weeks ago we told the owner that we were going to move. My brother told the that the owner was going to come to the house at least once a week with some people that want to rent the house. I really want to know if thats normal in the US. I don't like that people come to the house while we still living there. Yesterday told me "Its normal here in the US, because if u dont let them in. They can call the cops." and i was like .. are you serious?.... I would like to know if thats true.

  1. The owner has a right to show the house to prospective renters. However, he must let you know in advance when he's coming. If he doesn't, you have the right to refuse entry. As long as you're renting, and pay on time, that is YOUR home. He can only enter with your permission. It is up to you if you want to be there when he brings a prospective tenant.

  2. Yes, in the US that is how it's done. The landlord does that so you can have a tenant as soon as you move out and not louse money by not having a tenant. Before he brings anyone into what is still your home, he must give you 24 hours notice. I don't think he'd call the cops. He has a right to let himself in once you've been given notice that he is coming.

  3. Make sure you give the owner 30 days written notice.  If you have a lease that you are breaking, it is in your interest to let the landlord show the house.  It is standard procedure for the landlord to show the house while you occupy it.  BUT he should tell you in advance that he is showing it.  It is also in your interest to have the house neat when he does show it.  If you do not let him show it, and you have a lease, he can take you to court, and you will probably lose.  Remember, he has your security deposit also.      I have been a landlord for 30 years.

  4. yes it is true-it's their house. at least he told you he was going to do it.

  5. Yes they have that right. But you have rights, too. You should get 2 days notice before he brings people into your apartment.

  6. It's standard that when the renter is getting ready to move soon, the owner would bring potential renters in, so they can try to get it re-rented as soon as possible.  Realize that while it's emply, the owner isn't getting any money for rent..  They should let you know ahead of time.

  7. .   He must give you 48 hour written notice before entering.  He knows that.  But you may not want to make it difficult for him if he has been nice (has he?).
