Question:

Is it OK to get an additional occupant in my apt but NOT tell my landlord?

Here's the deal...I really want to save money and I live in the city of LA. I currently have a 1 bedroom apartment and I pay about $1400 in rent per month. I want to get a roommate to share the rent and utilities with, but NOT tell the landlord. BUT, I'm wondering since my new additional occupant will *not* be on the lease itself, I know my landlord will not be ok with it and he will ultimately find out that I have another occupant in my apartment and he or she isn't even on the lease.

I was wondering if anyone knows any good excuses to tell the landlord to keep the additional occupant as my roommate WITHOUT having my landlord add the extra 10% on my rent due to additional occupant in the same apartment. Any ideas???? My lease says that if any one else stays in your apartment for more than 14 days, then he or she is no longer a guest and becomes a resident. I really do NOT want the landlord to add in the extra 10% for additional occupancy. Any help here?? Maybe I should say that my new roomie is family or a caretaker who comes to live in my apt every once in awhile.....? The issue is that I live so close to the landlord so he will find out if I have a new roommate not on the lease...

HELP!!!!

  1. Hi,

Stop trying to act like a DIRT BAG, and let the Landlord know.  This could be cause for an eviction, and you don't want that on your public record.

  2. The lease says it all. If the landlord finds out, you're going to get charged extra.

  3. Violating the lease is a cause for eviction. Make your decision based on that fact.

Plus, even when he doesn't choose to evict you he can sue for back rent, late fees for each of those months, court costs and legal fees and and possibly interest and additional penalties as provided by the lease or local law.
