  1. Metformin/Glucophage is a systemic drug. It takes about 3 to 4 weeks to get fully into the system to work effectively. Missing a few doses will change nothing. But it will eventually work its way out of your system at the same rate it started working fully.

Take pepto or antacids or something with the Metformin to take care of the upset stomach or digestive problems. Didn't your doctor or pharmacist tell you this? No? Did you go back and ask before stopping the med? NO? And didn't they tell you to always take it WITH food? Not after meals, but WITH!!!

Most doctors advise very small doses to start with then work up to full dosage to do the job. half a 500mg for a little while, then half morning and evening, then full evening and then adding to the full morning. That way it doesn't aggravate stomach or digestive process so much. Regular Metformin maximum dosage per day is 2500 mg.

You must talk to your doctor before changing off this medication. You must tell the doctor about the stomach upset or digestive upset. Don't just quit taking it unless you want to be back in the 19th and early 20th century groups who lost eyesight, feet all the way to the hip, and so on and on.

  2. Interesting question. Just yesterday, my husbands doctor told him to stop taking his metformin immediatly due to bad interactions he has been experiencing since he started taking it May 2. So since his doctor told him to stop immediatly I will assume that it is fine. Just make sure you doctor is aware of what you are doing! Good luck!
