Is it Phelps better than Spitz?

Taking in consideration all the technological advances that Phelps has at his disposition. Spitz even have a mustache....

Spitz is the best during his prime. Phelps is the best at the moment. It's difficult to say that Phelps is better. But for sure, Michael Phelps would be in the history books of Olympics.

I get what you're saying, spitz didnt have a fancy suit or swimcap or even goggles but Phelps IS better. Phelps has won 14 career golds, that's pretty insane.

Spitz seems to have said Phelps is better. Certainly Phelps is more versatile (very strong free and fly) which is why he can win medleys.

But I wonder why Phelps did not take on Bernard, Sullivan and co. at the 50m and 100m sprint freestyles. I know he had enough on his plate but I wonder if he thought he might just get beaten?

By a landslide.  Disregarding all technologies, Phelps is the best SWIMMER of all times.

Phelps was born with a torso and arms that are longer in proportion to shorter legs with very flexible ankles that are better to kick with and the longer torso and arms are better for strong swimming strokes. They said he also makes less lactic acid from exercise than normal for some unknown reason so he doesn't get as sore after exercise. He won 8 golds, Spitz won 7. He was also lucky in the relay races that his teammates did well. Mustaches should slow you down. Spitz might have been faster without the mustache.
