I know it's bad if you scratch to the point of making them bleed and scab, but does just scratching alone make them worse if you dont overdo it? If so, why? What specific properties of a bite make that happen?

  1. they can get infected and they may scar so dont scratch!

  2. whenever u get bitten by a mosquito is their saliva that causes the irritation on ur skin and the uncontrollable itch. Its not good to scratch cause u can scratch open ur skin and get infections (happens to me dozens of times) and its no fun. Put calamine or hydrogen peroxide or baby powder to reduce the swelling and calm down the itch

  3. I lived in mosquito country all my life and it seemed scratching only made it worse. But once it was bleeding it usually seemed to take the itch away.

Mosquitoes inject some of their saliva into you before they start sucking. I am told it thins your blood so they can suck it through that tiny proboscis. It is also what causes you to itch like crazy afterwards. Rumour has it that if a mosquito is allowed to finish its meal in peace it will suck out all the saliva and you won't itch afterwards.
