Is it a bad business idea?

Question

Selling used furniture online-I know people do it on Ebay, but I'm having doubts. I just started my business (like a couple days ago) and people keep calling asking where I'm located. So now I'm getting discouraged because their reaction when I tell them the store is on-line is "oh" like they are surprised. Do you think this is a stupid idea? There's definitely a market, but I'm concerned people won't buy on-line.

The only probroblem I see with this business is that the cost to ship large pieces would most likely out weigh the savings you could offer. But if you could figure out a way that you could still save $ including shipping then your on your way.

I think it could work if your website has plenty of good, clear photos of each piece of furniture, from all angles, and if you offer the customer the opportunity to refuse the item if they don't like it when delivered.  As you say, people do it on eBay.  I know someone who sold an antique bed on eBay for a couple of thousand pounds.

Maybe people are concerned about how trustworthy you are without a bricks and mortar shop, and without the eBay rating system.  It might help if your website clearly shows your home address and a land line telehone number, and perhaps some testimonials as well.

People usually want to "kick the tires" when it come to furniture.  I don't think most people are interested in buying on-line, especially given the shipping and insurance charges.

If you can provide detailed photo images of the wear and tear on the furniture and place them on your website then there shouldn't be a problem. Most people would still rather see the furniture in person to see it's true condition.
