Is it a bad idea to defrag my pc whilst installing software?

I am installing some games but would like to defrag at the same time to save time.

  1. I would be interested in seeing how that would work. I don't think you can have the two processes running at the same time. Defrag first, then install the game.

  3. wait to defrag it until you're done.  i always start it before i go to bed and let it run overnight.

  4. That would depend on the specific defragmenter, it's resource usage and whether it competes aggresively with the installer for system resources. It may cause the installer (or the system) to slow down.

    If you are using an automatic defragmenter like Diskeeper 2008 that has Invisitasking i.e. it defrags in the background using only idle system resources, then it's perfectly safe to use your computer as usual (including installing and playing games) while Diskeeper is running. Diskeeper will always give priority to other programs and automatically suspend and resume defragmentation according to available resources.

  5. Defragment your drive then do the install. No sense in wasting time with a bad installation.
