Is it a bad idea to get a pomeranian if I have cats? I am just worried about all the things that the dog could contract from outside? All my cats are inside cats, will they get a lot of fleas and sickness' if I put tick and flea medicine on the dogs?

  1. it really depends on the age of the cats. young cats will be more willing to accept a new play buddy but you will need to get a puppy or young dog, so he can get used to the cats as well.

  2. Dogs and cats all over the world get along famously together.  And some of them don't.  Introduce your puppy to the kitties,  always supervise their play until you are sure they have learned to become friends.  This shouldn't take too long.  The kitties will hiss and arch,  the puppy will bark and charge.  Let them work it out for themselves, just be there to prevent kitty from scratching puppy's face, possibly injuring an eye.

As for fleas and other ailments,  make sure your kitties have had their baby shots, and make sure puppy has had his baby shots.  Don't forget to keep up-to-date with any booster  or rabies shots that they will need. And Frontline and Advantage both make wonderful products for cats and dogs that keep the fleas away.  You'll apply it to both kitties and puppy (the pkg says every month, but unless you live in flea-ville.. I only use it about once every 4 to 6 months)

Make sure puppy gets heartworm medication too.  That seems to be much more prevalent a disease than it was in the past.

Your vet will advise you on what they'll need.

As far as them getting along,  they probably will learn to become great friends. Try to not allow puppy to be TOO aggressive and try to not allow kitty to be TOO aggressive when they first meet and all should work out fine.

  3. All i know that sometimes dogs and cats get along but others don't sorry i cant really help you out that much

  4. Well really depends on your cats if u get a puppy and let the cat up high some where it can ascape from the puppy. I have a bulldog and a scottish fold cat and they get on great, they sleep with each other and wash each other.Good luck.

  5. As long as all the animals are up to date with all of their shots,  there should be no health hazards. If your cats are not up to date, you must do this first before thinking about new pets.

And I am not sure what you mean by your last question. If the dog were to have fleas or ticks, the cats would eventually get those too. If you want to treat them, you can buy the right medication that would work for both dogs and cats.

  6. Most likely yes, it is a bad idea, but heres what you need to do.

Go to the place where you may get a dog, [hopfully animal shelter, because they'll let you do this>] and bring your cat, and see how they both react.

I got a cocker spaniel, and I have 6 cats, and they sleep together, and have a blast playing together. They love eachother.

You may not have to do this, because on your local animal shelter website, they list the dogs, and it tells you if they get along with cats or not.

  7. no but you better take care of it and pay more attention to your cats than the new dog
