Is it a bad idea to go to school part time for one semester?

im a freshman in college, and im thinking about going to school part time this semester. im majoring in nursing. i went to register yesterday, and only registered for 2 classes(8units). i dont want to go full time this semester because i just want to see how the prereqs are, and with the nursing program being difficult to get into, i cant afford to get a failing grade. ill start going full time in the spring, and take summer.

I have a lot of friends who do that with the harder classes. They take a half load so they can put more time to studying each of the more intense classes.
