Question:

Is it a bad idea to major in Creative Writing?

I've wanted to be a novelist since before I can remember, it's always been my dream. However, one of my friends tells me that majoring in Creative Writing is a stupid idea and that I should change my major to English. I realize that I can obviously still write a novel no matter what I major in, but what would you recommend? I really can't imagine doing anything else with my life.

  1. I would major in English and minor in Creative Writing because in English you can always be a teacher until you complete your book and things take off. Whereas with a Creative Writing degree there are less chances for a job. Either way i hope you finish your book soon so I can read it but until then remember you have to keep the lights on!!!

  2. Why not major in one, English, and minor in the other.

This way you will get the best of both worlds.

Not everyone can be a writer.

Writers put their  heart and soul into their works.

Having a good idea for a book does not insure the book will be successful.

It took Alex Haley ten years to write "Roots." Not all books take that long to write but you can see it can be a long process.

    Good luck!

    Al

  3. I don't think its a stupid major, but i would also major in English and maybe minor in creative writing.  If you feel it in you to write a novel, you are correct, you could major in law and still do just that.  Keep it up and do what you feel is right.
