  1. If you already know quite a bit about music and are good on another instrument, I think it's a great idea.  However otherwise, I have often seen people missing out on some basic technical points and especially losing out on some parts of music theory.  It depends how far you want to take instrumental playing; if it's just a hobby I suppose go for it.

  2. If you can afford lessons, definitely take them!  Just because you can teach yourself to play an instrument doesn't mean that you'll be teaching yourself proper technique. And if you run into something that you're not quite sure about, and you have to guess and guess wrong, you may be learning bad habits that will be hard to break later on.  Learning will be much more effective if you have someone helping you!  In the long run, you'll come out as a better player and better musician if you have a teacher.

  3. Depends on what instrument. I know some people who are self-taught in the guitar, but it's really hard to be self-taught on the piano. If you're able to teach yourself how to play the piano, you should be able to graduate university by age 9.
