Question:

Is it a big deal to make sure a dvd player has an hdmi port, even if it has component video ports?

The ones with HDMI seem to cost $15 or 20 more than the others. I'm trying to be frugal, and at the same time, I'd like this dvd player to last a long time. The one we have now is almost 10 years old.

  1. HDMI certainly is a wiser choice than just Component outputs...and if that DVD lasts ten years, you just paid $2.00 a year investing in HDMI.....

Looks cheap from that point of view.....

AND you can get a 100% GOOD HDMI cable for $20, and you don't NEED a $100 cable for that type of signal anyways...

Get an HDMI 1.3a  cable from monoprice.com

  2. If you have an HDTV capable of 1080p, you need hdmi cables to achieve this resolution.  Or, even if you have a standard HDTV (720p, 1080i), you will need an hdmi port to upscale standard DVDs to near-HD quality.  Otherwise, the difference between component and hdmi is probably not at all noticeable.

  3. To get the best picture you do!

  4. HDMI is more important if you have an AMP in-between all your components. Something to consider is HDMI standards are all over the map, so what is standard today will change tomorrow.

If you're on a tight budget then stick to Component video. The quality with decent cable is pretty close for most people and don't get fooled by the price of HDMI. You can get a 6 foot cable for $15 from any real a/v store instead of $100. Check e-bay as well.
