My ex girlfriend took my laptop computer and began emailing my personal and business electronic bank statments to a relative in an attempt to show how much money I made. Can I press charges for sending personal information over the internet.

  1. Your ex girlfriend should not have done this.  It is a dastardly crime and if you can prove that she indeed did this you can sue her and win. Try to find a lawyer who will give you your first interview free of charge and discuss the matter with him.

  2. Did you allow her access to your laptop?  If you allowed her access, what steps did you take to protect your sensitive personal information, i.e. did you set up a separate logon account for her to use and keep your banking information in a folder that that account did not have access to?  Or did you just let her log on as you and do as she pleased?

Or did she steal it?  And if she did, did you file a police report and press charges?

Basically if you allowed her to use the laptop and didn't take reasonable steps to protect your personal information from prying eyes, you'll have an extremely hard time convincing anyone that you were not negligent in the disclosure.

Consult with an attorney of course, just don't hold your breath.
