Is it a crime to have chickens in your backyard as pets in CT?

Live in CT own a couple of hens as pets. Just received a letter from the city saying we are not able to have chickens in our backyard. We are in violation of the Public Health Code of the state of Ct. and the town Municipal code. I think that is ridiculous. I would like to get some feed back from chicken owners as pets.

I live in the city of Phoenix, Arizona, and the only way I can have chickens is that I'm in FFA at my high school.  (Future Farmers of America!) Or as we call it...  The Freaking Farmer Assoation!  haha

The state public health code sounds a little strange but some municipal codes don't allow livestock in city limits.  Ask your codes officer what the statutes say.  It can't be illegal in the whole state.  There are some rural and agricultural areas in Connecticut.  Keeping a few chickens for fresh eggs is a fast growing hobby and municipalities all over the country are rewriting their codes to allow it on a limited scale.  Some common rules are no more than 6 hens and no roosters.

Well, I live nowhere near Ct, but my family and I raised chickens in the suburbs. We had no trouble with it. They should seriously let you keep the chickens, 2 chickens are not a serious threat to public health! That is ridiculous! You could say the same thing about a dog, they p**p, and pee, but they have teeth, unlike a hen.
