If you steal something from a store that is less than $5?

If not, what is the amount of money something has to be worth to become a felony?

  1. In Canada it would be classified as theft under $5000. Personally I think this is stupid, but what can I do about it. That's the government for you. Good Luck and have a nice day.

  2. Most states a felony is at $500, but shoplifting is a class A misdemeanor and will go on your criminal record just the same.

  3. that is a Misdermeanor, For it to be a Felony the amount of money would have to be over 400.01

  4. In Ca the line is $400 from misdemeanor to felony.  Unless it is proven that you entered with the intent to steal, like having a secret pocket, then it is burglary which is a felony in Ca.  Also any theft convicting with jail time automatically makes the next theft of any sort a felony. They call that petty theft with a prior.

  5. Stealing is stealing........sounds like you shoplifted something and are wondering if you will be convicted.
