Is it a good idea to breastfeed for more than a year?

I've been breastfeeding for 13 months, and she seems to not want to stop. So I've made the decision to keep going. She eats meals, but occasionally wants breastmilk.

  1. Absolutely - you go girl !  The only people that wouldn't agree with you are some weirdo suburban Mums, but whose advice would you prefer  - the World Health Organisation's and every Doctor that I've spoken to or someone with a bad perm !

We have a history of long term breastfeeding in our family - like breastfeeding till the kids are aged 2 to 4 and I can tell you that NONE of them have have separation or attachment issues, issues eating real food etc. etc..

You are totally doing the right thing, good on you.

  2. I recommend, as did my pediatrician, to continue breastfeeding until the baby weans him/herself, or until about age 3 which ever comes first. A hundred years ago, women continued to nurse their children on up into their school years. The only reason we don't today is because society views it as perverse. (Which is ridiculous!) Breast milk is SO VERY healthy for your child and the longer he/she can get it the better!

    Good luck and God Bless!

  3. Yes it is ok. I breastfeed my baby girl until she was 2 years old.

  4. Way to go Mom!

I breastfed for 11 months- my son decided to wean himself and it was harder for me than it was for him! I wished I could have done it longer! Congrats and keep it up!

  5. This is actually the ideal situation.  Many people believe you should let the child wean instead of forcing them off too early!  She knows her own body best!  Way to go, Mama!  You're doing great!

  6. I had major problems with breastfeeding so unfortunately it didn't work for me.  However, I love seeing a mom breastfeeding her baby/toddler.  As long as baby is happy, who cares what society says.

It's moms who go beyond that infant mark in breastfeeding that helps to change societies views.  One mom at a time, this world can become more open to breastfeeding beyond the first year!

    Congratulations and Good Luck!!~~~

  7. Yes, it's a wonderful idea.  As long as you continue to breastfeed you will continue to provide her with valuable immunities, as well as giving her a highly nutritious food that is easy to digest.  And, of course, the bonding benefits don't stop at 12 months either.

Continue to nurse for as long as the two of you choose to.

  8. yeah its fine and good for her!

  9. Absolutely! If you are still enjoying nursing then there is no need to stop. I am firm believer that when your child is ready they will wean themselves. I nursed my daughter until she was 14 months old. The last month she was only nursing 1-2 times a day and then all of a sudden she decided that she no longer needed it. There was no stress with her trying to change her normal day to day routine. Enjoy it while you can because when they do stop you will end up missing it.
