Question:

Is it a good idea to buy a laptop in South Korea?

I live in Europe where computers are quite expensive partly because of the high VAT rates. I will be traveling to South Korea for a conference and thought it might be a good idea to buy a computer over there. Do you think it is a good idea? Given that I most probably will loose the warranty coming with my laptop, is it still worth the price?

  1. I bought my laptop there in Yongsan in Seoul (which is indeed a good place for everything electronic, its at yongsan or sinyongsan station). I indeed bought it for a much better price than what I would have had in Europe (probably around 200 euros less).

You really have to see with the sellers for warranty, most respectable brands would have some kind of international warranty (usually for like a year), I'm not a big fan of paying for warranties so I didn't ask about extensions and such, but I'm sure the dealers will be able to provide you with all the explanations you need. If they're not sure do not hesitate to ask them to call the company that built the laptop you want for confirmation. Company's hotlines are usually efficient in Korea and you should get an answer quickly.

You also want to make sure to ask for an English version of windows. It might require a day more for them to install it for you, though in my case the seller just gave a burnt copy of an english xp. They should not overcharge you for it.

It would be best to go there with a Korean friend who can translate for you, even though the sellers speak some English it might not be good enough for technical discussions.

  2. in seoul or other major cities yes

    anywhere else probably not

  3. I do recommend you buying computers & laptops in Korea because they have the HIGHEST quality, guareenteed (as you prolly know, Korea is very advanced in electronics such as computers and cellphones. Samsung and possibly LG are awesome computer makers.

It's also much cheaper than Europe, too! Pay around 1000 bucks and expect to purchase the best laptop youll ever have.

  4. Though I have no problem buying Korean brands, I highly recommend against buying a computer in Korea. Given the potential problems and the likely hood that the programs would be in Korean (yes, you can find ones at Youngsan that can have English installed, but what a hassel).

I live in Korea and have been here for four years. I brought my first laptop over with me and when I went home last summer I bought a new one and brought it back with me. With both I have had zero problems.
