My 9 yr old kid has been interested in the science of human anatomy since couple of years. She remains so much engrossed in the books she gets from the library. Is it a good idea to expose her to things on Discovery Health channel like surgeries, births, medical examiner kind of programs which do the post mortem investigations? I am trying to steer her into developing an interest in a career and make her set some goals for herself. This interest in medical science has been steady even though there are brief instances of being a popstar, archealogist, marine biologist(after a visit to the seaworld) etc. I want to keep developing her interest in the area .

I would greatly appreciate your advice.

Thanks and God bless,

April.

  1. Oh, this is very good to hear.. Of course is good idea!

  2. I think that's great she wants to learn more! As long as she is mature about it and doesn't start having friends over to watch a birth and they are immature, let her.

She'll probably grow up to be very successful, for she already is at a young age!

  3. Why not? It's good that she develops an interest early on, and she's lucky that you allow her to. I know people who forbade their children such things, and the children grew up to be scared of the thought of blood or an operation. Just make sure that she also knows that, even if Discovery Health usually shows the good side, there's a bad side as well, and that mistakes are very costly and possibly fatal.

  4. of course. your child wants to do something with her life. she is enthusiastic about something. that is wonderful. better than i can say for my child. all he does is sneak out and smoke pot and drink with his friends.

  5. I also think this is a great idea.  I grew up watching Doogie Howser, MD, but wasn't really exposed to the real-life situations that she has been exposed to.    I think that as long as she knows that post-mortem exams should only be done on dead people and that this and other procedures should only be done by trained professionals or those in training and under supervision, she should be fine.
