  1. One of the cool website on study abroad programs that I was came across, hopefully may help you :

  2. It 's an excellent way to improve your language skills. Do you speak the second language at all?

  3. I think it's a really good idea. I spent a summer in Australia (where they obviously still speak English), and I really wish I could have spent a semester abroad, but it didn't work out with graduate school. Two of my best friends went to Italy and Spain--you will be fine even if you don't speak the language--as long as you are there long enough you will start to pick it up. I have hosted students from South Korea and Brazil and they both did really well here. It will be an incredible experience for you!!

  4. You won't know until you try...Never sellyourself short...Anyone can do anything they put their mind too...unless it's physically impossible...and if you don't succeed...try try again...

  5. If you are a high school student ... and coming from the U.S. ... most places do NOT expect you to really know the language. In fact, they expect you not to! (Which doesn't say much for our language training, does it?)

The exception to that is an exchange to France, French speaking Switzerland or French speaking Belgium. Those areas require two years of high school French.

However, most exchange programs will ask you for your top three choices. When you finally find out where you are going, it is helpful for you to take some courses (Rosetta Stone is good) to get some basic skills down. Most programs will also send you to a language camp before you arrive in your host community.

It's actually a great idea to study abroad! Not only will you widen your outlook, you'll also get a new language which will be VERY valuable to you in the future! Colleges and universities also love exchange students and often offer preferred admissions and/or scholarships.

One thing, if you want to go next year, you need to HURRY! Most programs are closing applications soon -- if they have not done so already.

To find a program, ask your high school counselor for a recommendation or check on the approved list at www.csiet.org. Generally, AFS, Aspect, Rotary and YFU are reliable everywhere.

    Good luck!
