I'll be traveling to Playa Del Carmen (through Cancun) on May 5 (Cinco de Mayo). Is that a good idea? Will I run into trouble finding transportation between Cancun and PDC, because of all the celebration going on? Should I wait until the day after?

  1. I love when you (US people) ask things like this about May 5 and México.

You won't have problems in México in that time neither at touristic zones nor anywhere else.

In my country, México, May 5 is NOT a big party. It is a kind of mexican celebration in USA, not here. Here that is only Puebla's battle day (not big stuff).

Mexican independence day is September 16, but that is neither a problem to go to vacation sites. The hardest time to go on vacation (too crowded) in México is in Holy Week (we are mainly a catholic country).

  2. Don't worry..... May 5 isn't even an official holiday in Mexico (May 1st is - labor day), so most people (locals) will be working as it's just another normal day for them. I guess the party is bigger in USA than it is in Mexico, and I don't think there are many people form USA coming down all the way to Cancun/surroundings only for a long weekend. So it should be calm and you shouldn't have a problem with moving from one place to the other.

  3. Hola.  No.  Travel during Cinco de mayo is not a problem.  The fiestas are usuallly pretty low key and not traffic binding.  Kinda like your holiday Martin Luther King day....ask yourself.  Would you travel that day?  Sure. So go for it.

  4. Make your reservations now. Use a good company like the guys at 1-888-862-3806 and let them build a package for you. We save alot everytime we go by using them for everything.

  5. cabochic is right. 5 de mayo isnt mexican independence day as many up north think. independence day is in september, 16th i think, right? dont worry...........no problems with travel!

  6. Cinco de Mayo is NOT a big holiday in Mexico...it is an "American" Mexican holiday.  There are MANY other lolidays in Mexico much bigger.  I live in the state of Veracruz, and cinco de Mayo is ignore, as it is in most of Mexico.
