I was recently lucky enough to talk with the renowned marketing author Seth Godin (via email) about a career in advertising or marketing. I told him that I'd like to work my way up from copywriter to creative director or better, but needed advice on how to get my foot in the door. In his reply, he told me that his best advice is to "flee the life of the agency and start your own gig." I'm in high school and plan to major in communications, business administration, or a similar subject in college. After that, I always thought it would be best to start as a copywriter or artist at an agency. This seems more stable and in some ways easier than Seth's advice. On the other hand, Seth is obviously successful. What do you think? Have other people before me done this? If so, how often do they succeed? Is it hard to get relatively large clients? If you think I should branch off later in my career, when is the best time to do so? What should I accomplish?
