Question:

Is it a good or bad idea to not let a person with a criminal record volunteer at their local zoo?

I was told by my city that due to a property weapons conviction two years ago, and a DUI seven years ago, that I am not able to volunteer at this time.

I went to my neighbors house with a knife and threatened him because he beat his girlfriend in their yard. I stabbed the side of their house.

I have since worked at a wildlife museum, and been left alone with keys as security for over 6 hours each night alone in a 65 million dollar museum. Nothing ever went wrong, and I made sure all of the animals were safe.

I guess that is life, and things are unfair. I guess they think I will either stab an elephant, or get drunk and ride a camel.

  1. i guess it would really depend on what the crimes were that were commited. if they have crimes against animals i dont really think that a zoo would be a good place for somone to work. and if somone had anger issues it might be a good idea for them to do community service there because animals have a way of calming people down, thats what i think anyway.

  2. Bad idea, these crimminals will be exposed to young and vounerable people

  3. It's understandable, but they ought to at least look at individual cases. If you've kept a clean record for the last two years, I don't see why they wouldn't let you help out. Try again in a year and see what they say. In the meantime, don't get discouraged. You've done good works helping out at other places!

Have you tried volunteering at a local animal shelter? I'm sure your help would be appreciated there. :-)

  4. It frankly sounds like you're probably the exception to the rule.  They probably need to narrow down what sounds like a very broad idea of theirs to keep the "bad element" out.  But if as you said they allow the court system to have people serve their community service there... it definitely sounds like a double standard.

I'm guessing they didn't even check your details before turning you down.
