Question:

Is it a good sign if a prospective employer says they are going to run a background check?

I just had a job interview a week ago. It went really well and everyone came in to meet me and they all seemed really impressed by me and told me they were fast tracking me and that I didn't have to come back for a second interview etc. They showed me the office and kept saying things like "you'll be" when discussing the prospective job. The woman also said she was going to run my background check and said it could take a week /week and a half. Is this a good sign that I may have the job. I followed up already with a thank you e-mail the day after the interview as well as an emailing asking if the employer was in need of any other materials such as my college transcripts or a copy of my auto insurance since I would be driving my car and she asked me twice if I had car insurance. I REALLY need this job and while I know there is no guarantee does it sound like I have a chance at it. My nerves are going crazy and I am getting married in six weeks! Talk about pressure!

  1. If you sure your background check if OK........looks like your on your way.......good luck........

  2. If the employer is going to put out the money for a back ground check it's definately a good sign. They are mostly looking for things like felonies, etc. If its for a proffesional job, they might ask you to explain glitches on your credit, etc.

  3. Yes, the background check is a good sign, since it shows that they are serious about hiring you.  You are either the finalist or one of the finalists.

It is a good idea to show that you are interested, either by phoning to follow up or by emailing or mailing a "thank you" letter.  You would be surprised how rare this is; few applicants go the extra step to make their interest clear.

  4. Yep it is a good sign, as long as your background check is okay--but emailing a thank you is a no-no.  It is very impersonal, you should WRITE a thank you as well.

  5. Of course it's a good sign! It costs money to do a background check and they wouldn't bother if they weren't seriously considering you.  However, don't spend money until you get the official offer because I have seen people lose jobs to a background check.  Basically if you were honest and up front you should be good to go, but finances can be a big issue for some employers.

Also, you sound very eager in this question which is good, but if you go overboard to the point of insecure and/or annoying, it could backfire on you.  You sent the thank you email so don't contact them anymore.  Let them contact you no matter how anxious you may be. Good luck
