    Quite frankly, you will not beat inflation and therefore you are losing money if you let it sit. However, there are some decent stocks paying a 5-6% div yield. Also, look into some DRIP (Dividend reinvestment programs)


  2. Not with interest rates as low as they are and inflation as high as it is.  But its a safe place to keep emergency money.

  3. No. Interest rates are SO low right now that you will be locking in a LOW rate when everyone is expecting rates to increase. You want to lock in CD rates when rates are HIGH. Seriously, with the stock market doing as poorly as it is right now you should be buying as many shares as you can. I'm buying retail stocks right now...but slowly, because I think they will continue to decline over the next six months. Even if they go down a bit further, you'll earn more than the 3-4% return that you would get on a CD if you can hang onto it for over the next year.
