With Fidel Castro stepping down, is there any chance of unrest or violence in Cuba right now? I'm planning to travel there next month.

  1. As they say, really this change is more symbolic - Raul has been acting president since July 2006. Fidel will still be around (and may retain some official titles - he hasn't said that he will give up head of the communist party, for instance).

The military remain loyal to Raul.

Most of the opposition have left and gone to Miami, where they are living a lot more comfortably than if they were in Cuba.

The populace are more interested in what home appliance they will get at subsidised prices.

I think the chances of violence are very small.

  2. I certainly wouldn't be concerned, Raoul has been minding the shop for almost two years with no problems.  There is no reason for unrest or violence.  Have a great trip and enjoy.

  3. No there won't be any unrest or violence in Cuba. Fidel Castro's brother has already been taking care of things while his brother has been ill and all of Cuba knows that. On top of a couple of the other correct comments, Cubans know that violence and revolting won't improve anything. And most are not interested in fighting, just improving situations by either leaving or building up the country one day.

As well, Cubans don't want to lose connection with the rest of the world. They love it when people come visit...it keeps them and their country alive and it's a way of staying in contact with friends all the time.

You will have nothing to worry about. There won't be any major changes most likely. Go and have fun and enjoy yourself.....enjoy Cuba!

  4. Don't worry, Raul is just as oppressive as Fidel. He's on board with keeping the Cuban people as poor and helpless as can be so that  Canadians and Brits can travel to Cuba so he can get his needed foreign exchange.

  5. I'm excited to be heading to Cuba at such an historic time. :) I head out Friday and I don't expect any problems at all. I called a friend there last night and he also doesn't expect anything to be different.

  6. Don't worry Cuba is a safe destination.

The resignation of Fidel Castro will not change very much , his brother Raul is already more than one year in command.

The country is not led by one man.

March is an excellent month to go , it's warm but not to warm. In August and July it can be very hot. There was a bit rain last week but I heard that the weather now was great.

Have a good time and don't worry Cubans are kind people.

  7. I think with Raul taking over and Fidel still alive very little will change.
