we have a restraunt in town that the workers do not wear gloves while making your food. As I watched, she touched my straw and slid it into my drink. The man at the grill picked my burger up to lay on the grill with his bare hands, he also touchede the bun, pickles and such, when I requested that he did not touch my food, he said he didnt have any other way to prepare it. They do not use gloves. This is disgusting

  1. Contact the health department! That's totally sick and disgusting!

  2. i think u need to chill out and get over it. the service industry is one of the most challenging fields. If the waitress had to change gloves everytime she made you a drink you would wonder "whats taking her so long?" resulting in a lower tip. Also, in the kitchen the cooks usually do about 3 things at once and changing gloves would be a pain in the asss. So to answer your question, yes they probably should but u need to get over it.

  3. Depends on the state..I know in Az you can take classes and get a special permit not to use gloves but you have to keep a hand washing record of employees..As far as that not being the worse thing that can happen..I have been in the restaurant service for years as a server and a manager and I can promise you I have Never done anything gross to anyones food nor allowed anyone else to..Whats the point.

  4. here's how this generally is supposed to work. however the health departments are changing  certain regulations.

    as a chef here's what's going on.

    A chef has to change his gloves when he does the following.

    * Changes to a different meat. IE: beef to poultry

    * Changes from meat to RTE foods: IE: Beef to tomatoes

    * smoked

    * touched any part of his body

    * sneezed, coughed. ect...

    A chef does not have to wear gloves BUT HAS TO wash his hands before performing any of these because gloves get in the way.

    * Plating or expediting

    * Pastries or detail bag work

    * Picking up raw meat to cook

    * Knife work

    now if this chef did not wash his hands in between everything going on then you have a problem.. Keep in mind too another faux pas that happens often too are too many chefs don't change their gloves. They'll wear the same ones all day and maybe change it 2 or 3 times instead of the normal 30 to 50 times.

  5. Nope!  there is no law that requires gloves.  I worked in restaurants to get through college, and the only real requirement is a hat or hairnet for the cooks.  Believe me, you don't want to know what else goes on behind the scenes.  Touching your food is the LEAST of your worries!!  I've seen things dropped on the ground and then put back on the grill... yuck... Honestly, the health department checks in on restaurants pretty frequently, but even when there's a "concern" the restaurant is just given a warning.  I'm sorry to say it, but that's the price you pay for eating out!

  6. This law varies depending on your location. In some areas, gloves are required for contact with all ready-to-eat foods. Other areas have glove exemptions that are granted to restaurants with excellent hand washing records. Still others have no glove requirements at all!

    You'll have to contact your local government to find out for sure if this restaurant was violating any laws.

  7. In some states it isn't against the law to prepare food w/out gloves.  You'd be amazed at how many places don't use them.  I'm a professional chef and don't always wear gloves.  As long as the employees are clean, wash their hands, and maintain proper sanitation practices there really isn't anything to be disgusted.

    He did cross contaminate if he touched your bun/pickles/and such after placing your burger on the grill w/out washing his hands.  That is cause for concern due to the potential ecoli risk.  And that's gross.
