Question:

Is it a slipping Prop Hub???

Hi, This morning I set out in my twin engined 32ft crusier with Volvo DPS.

Tried to get on the plain but engines would not rev past 3000rpm.

I need approx 3600 to hit the plain.... In neutral both engines rev out no problem.....

So I put on snorkel and flippers and checked the drives and props... There were a lot of barnacles on the backs of all the props... So I scrapped them off, an hour later I was ready to try again....

OK seemed more responsive, Port engine felt good and achieved the 3600rpm nicely, starboard engine started to rev out to 5000rpm but for very little gain in speed...

I think and it feels like the the engine revs and the prop is not turning at the the same rate... I assume slipping on the hub..

By me scrapping of the barnacles could this have caused the problem?? Or was it a matter of time... I'm off to see a mechanic tomorrow...

Any words of advice welcome..

  1. scrapping of the barnacles   could  not  of  caused  that  , It's  just  amatter   of  time   , Age  , Time  in  water    ect   ect

  2. I,d have Both props checked and possibly re Hubbed

  3. Your props are most likely keyed to the shafts, so if your prop is slipping you probably just sheared the key.  this most likey also messed up the taper on the shaft, so you will probably need a new shaft, and a new prop.
