Is it a state Law in FL that a home renter has to have renter insurance?

I was told my the company I am renting a house from that it was a FL state law that I got renters insurance is this true?

  1. No, there is no law that says you must carry renter's insurance. That doesn't mean that the leasing company can't require it as part of your lease, though.  In most if not all states they can, as long as they require it of everyone.

    It's not a bad idea to have, anyway.  That's the only way you get coverage for your possessions if they are damaged in a fire or by a burst pipe, for example.  And you also get liability in case you accidentally cause a fire, or one of your guests causes damage to the property.

I don't think it's required unless your lease specifies that it's required... but it would be really dumb not to get it.  It's really cheap, like $10 a month.  And then if someone breaks in (never know if your landlord is shady and will break in and take your things- I've seen it happen) your stuff will be replaced.

  3. Nope.

    However, they can have a company policy requiring you to have it...so in the end, does it make any difference?

    It's about $150 a year to get it...and it's money well spent.
