I have an audition soon to be in an orchestra. I play French Horn and while practicing my song, I can't seem to get through the whole thing without having to empty. Is it acceptable to empty in the middle of an audition. If not suggestions on how to prevent too much water?

  1. yes that is acceptable.

  2. Absolutely.  Being a brass player your judges will know that there will be spit and that it will need to go somewhere :)  It would actually be worse to not empty your spit, because that puts your sound and tone in danger.  I have been through many audition processes, and anything that you need to do to keep your instrument in good working condition (swabbing, emptying spit, etc) is completely acceptable.  Good luck in whatever you're auditioning for!

  3. it's perfectly fine. the people who are judging you know this is gonna happen and i'll improve your performance.  i really don't know many songs that i can get through fully without emptying spit.  but it's perfectly fine.

  4. probably.

they want to hear your best sound, which is impossible to achieve with a lot of condensation in your horn. I play french horn too. and i feel your pain. trust me. there are so many places for it to hide.

just make sure you empty everything before going into the audition. and don't freak out if you have to empty it. it happens to everyone.
