Question:

Is it acceptable to give homemade Christmas Candy as gifts?

I can already tell that this year I will not have a lot of money to spend on gifts. There are about 10 couples/families we exchange with (I've tried to stop this, but they don't agree...obviously they make more than us). I normally start buying now when I see sales, and just store it between now and December. But the money just isn't there. So this year I was thinking it would be better for us financially if I just made candy and gave it as gifts mainly Peanut Butter Balls, Rollo Turtles, Fudge, Peanut Brittle and maybe something else. Is it rude or impolite to wrap these up in cellophane and give them as gifts? I know maybe a tin would be nice too, but I'm more concerned I'm going to look cheap...anyone do this?

  1. It is the thought that counts in a gift and a lot of people are having financial hardship right now.  I'm sure many people would appreciate homemade goodies verses material items they don't know what to do with.  I suggest going to the 99 cents store and getting some Christmas themed plates to put them on.  Then the recipient will also receive a plate they can use over and over.  I think its wonderful and thoughtful that you will put so much work into the making of the gifts you give.

  2. Great idea. They also make ornaments that are hollow, you could put some of the candy in those.  Try orientaltrading.com for some ideas.

  3. You should give what you can, and if people are selfish enough to think it's not a nice present then F 'em.  It shouldn't be about money, it should be about the thought and the kindness that went into the gift.

  4. Of course it's acceptable!  Good homemade gifts are always great!  For packaging, try going to the dollar store.  You can find fairly nice glass and tin containers there, or you can also put them in a Christmas mug.  Another thing to do is get a slightly larger container, fill it with colored shredded paper, fill the rest with candy and inexpensive ornaments for decoration.  One other suggestion is a "cookie mix in a jar."  Here are some sights.

I hope this helps!  I wish I were on your Christmas list this year!  I love homemade gifts!

  5. When i was 5 or 6 my mom would have me paint christmas ornaments and such for presents,Last year I made christmas candies at my birthday with my friends and My mom gave them to their families as gifts. Candies are delicious and home made too, A nice tin you can get at wal-mart for about $1 And you can look-up some different candies and popcorn balls to give out. Christmas doesn't have to be expensive and stress full So don't make it be, If they don't like their gift next year don't give them once simple as that.

  6. to make something takes more time and thought, so why not.

    better than some gift card

  7. Yes...I'm sure everyone loves homemade Christmas candy..I'd be really happy to get that as a gift! :)

  8. I give candy every year to my family along with something else, but this year I am only doing candy because our money is also tight, and they always tell me just give them chocolates and they will be happy.  I am sure your family will love it to because you took the time to make it yourself.  Anyone can go to the store and buy something meaningless  but not everyone is willing to take the time to make something.  I would suggest though that you wrap them in foil wrappers that you can buy at any candy store.  They are cheep and easier to keep  on the candies.  Also if you are going to make a lot of candy I wouldn't do the Rollo Turtles because pecans are very pricey.

  9. Homemade is ALWAYS best! And your candies sound delicious.

When I scrimp on the gifts I always go out of my way to wrap really nicely. Nice wrapping paper, pretty ribbon, fake flowers, bright tissue, etc. can stretch a gift a long way.

Also consider making refrigerator magnets out of flat, wooden squares (Michael's has them for 1.99 a bag and magnets. You can personalize them with pictures from the internet printed on thick paper and glued to the wood. Everyone needs more fridge magnets!

Also wine glass tags are an easy, inexpensive gift to make like these ones: http://www.wineglasscharms.com

And last but not least, handpainted christmas tree ornaments are always appreciated.

    Have fun!
