Most lawns benefit from a brushing with a stiff broom or raking with a wire (lawn) rake about once a month to remove debri. In spring and summer, this should be done before mowing. In autumn, scarifying (vigorous raking)  is also beneficial.

If you have dead moss and weeds then yes

A light racking is ok without uprooting the grass. It is an excellent means if you have moss.

the only time you should have to rake a lawn is in the spring you remove thatch, snow mold or other debris.  When raking you a leaf rake, a rake that is metal will uproot the grass.
