C.G. Sorry I should have put it simpler for you. Have you never heard of a lawn roller? Not an old oil drum filled with concrete. I suspect Realist has you summed up. A roller in this context is not a Rolls Royce or a machine for rolling cigarettes.

  1. No do not do this.  You will compact the soil which will prevent the lawn from getting water and nutrients.  Roots don't spread better with compacted soil.

  2. If possible NO!!!!! Rolling is harmful as it causes soil compaction. This ruins the drainage quality of the soil, restricts aeration leading to poor root development and a weaker turf. Avoid if possible.

    Edit:-

Is C.G. above on this planet,? or is she one of those hilly billies we hear about.

  3. Yes, I do it every spring. It helps pack in the soil for the roots to spread better.

  4. Please tell us what you mean by "roll my lawn".

Out here in the west, many communities are paying homeowners to roll up their lawns and replace them with a drought tolerant landscape. Not only is it advisable but beautiful - however, wrestling on the grass is out after that.

If you are just laying down sod then "rolling" it with a "weighted drum" is advised to compress the roots into the soil and press out the air pockets that will keep it from taking up water and nutrients.

Are either of these what you mean by rolling?
