Question:

Is it advisable to water a lawn in the morning AND the evening in HOT Sacramento, CA?

My lawn looks like it needs more water. Right now I only water in the morning for about 10 minutes in each area. I am wondering if there is something else I should be doing to make it greener. Would watering two times a day be good for the lawn?

  1. water in the morning before it gets hot and at night

  2. its best to water in the  early morning before the  the sun get out  around  12 noon .....  and early evening when the sun has gone down .......   your ten mins inst getting it....

      try for  around 45mins  ...

have you considered a sprinker  with a built in timer...

  3. If the lawn is already established, you're watering it WAY TOO OFTEN, and your grass probably isn't getting nearly enough water.  You need to water deeply, but infrequently.  The grass will actually let you know when it needs more water, if you're observant, you'll notice.  Water each area for about an hour or so, perhaps even longer at first, to get those roots down deep in the dirt.  Then wait four days and do it again, then wait five before the next watering, etc.  Your grass will appreciate it, and you'll lose less to evaporation.  I prefer irrigation, laying the hose in an area to allow the water to spread along the ground and seep into the soil.  If your yard is uneven, make sure you lay the hose on the higher spots and let the water find the low areas.  Good luck!

  4. I live in Sacramento, too. We water much less frequently but for longer periods of time. My front lawn gets watered about 45 minutes, 3 times a week in the mornings. My back lawn gets watered once a week for about the same time. They are different types of grass. The back is much hardier while the front is more thin and delicate.  I've always read that less frequent watering with greater time between waterings will encourage hardiness.
