Is it against the law in Canada to have a foreign license plate on your vehicle?

The province that I reside in only requires you to have one plate, the back one. However I see alot of people put novelty plates on the front of their vehicles. My father was recently pulled over because the plate on the front of his vehicle was a foreign plate, not a novelty one. He was told that it was illegal to have that on. He has been driving around with this plate on for the last 10 years. So is it against the law in Canada or not??

  1. When the RCMP in Saskatchewan have nothing better to do or are feeling particularly prickish they start pulling over motorists with a novelty plate on the front of their cars and make them take them off. So I guess they are illegal.

And that includes Roughrider plates. The RCMP make lots of friends on the days that they do this.

  2. In places that only use one license plate, it is against the law to have a license plate from a foreign country or other province or state. If it went unnoticed for a while, it may be for several reasons, like it just wasn't noticed, or it wasn't a priority at the time.
