Is it against the law to marry an illegal immigrant?

Would I get sent to jail for marrying an illegal immigrant?

I'm from the USA.

Straight answers would be nice, I don't need a lecture on morals right now.

  1. No, it is not against the law. A lot of illegal immigrants consider it the way to became that legal immigrant. Be careful, but if you love each other is OK. If you  take money for that marriage you may go to prison or be punished somehow, it depends on state you live in.


  2. um ik that you have to get a special paper before you acctual get married, so the other person can get a full green card

  3. its not illegal.  It doesn't grant them their green card, but it does give them better chance of gaining citizenship.  

  4. No you wouldn't it would actually help them if your a citizen they'd get their citizenship right away most immigrants do this they pay a stranger to marry them to get it  

  5. Marry this person, and then go straight to Dept. of immigration and naturalization. File for temporary status,and begin paperwork to gain permanent alien status. After 5 yrs they can file for citizenship.

  9. no its not but if you want to help him get legal there would be steps to take and for that your best bet is to get a good attorney specializing an immigration this is a timely process but well worth it if you love him

  13. No. It would only be against the law if it wasn't a real marriage. Like if you were only doing it so that they could stay in the country.

  14. Absolutely not... But if you are marrying an illegal just to make them a citizen then that is a serious crime and they investigate pretty often.

  16. No it's not illegal..but you need to start he citizenship process..and there are wait times and other restrictions and requirements It's best to find an immigration attorney to find out what needs to be done..one mistake and the deportation process begins again.

  17. No, it is not illegal, but most likely they are only marrying you to stay in the country, because you know when you marry them it grants them  their citizenship process.

All of these people don't know what theyre talking about.  It is legal and it will enable them to stay in the country and as long as you are married for atleast six months they will be able to stay in the country even if you get divorced.  However, you may be investigated and if the marriage is thought to not be legitimate then you could get in some serious trouble.

  21. No....it isn't illegal. My cousin married an illegal immigrant ( twice deported ).....it is the deportation part that creates a problem....not the illegal immigrant status. Getting legalized after deportation is MUCH more difficult.

  23. No. Not unless you were only doing it so they can get citizen status. If you are marrying them because you love them you won't get in trouble. My mother in law married an illegal and she has never been to jail.

    i think that its illegal to marry someone just to obtain residency or citezinship....so they make sure the marriage is legit

  26. In order to get a marraige license (at least in NY) you need to prove citizenship so I'm not really sure if it's actually possible to marry an illegal.

    You have to be together for about 5 years before you can get them papers though..its a looong process.

    If shes in the usa illegally then she might have pay a fine for being here but think that's about it.

  31. of course its not against the law to marry an illegal u could marry who ever u want its just a little pain in the neck cuz all of the paper work and processing u have to do before its legal
