U see the situation is that my friend is renting her upstairs for 500 a month. However I am paying 700 at my 1 bedroom apt, which BTW I love but just feel like reducing expenses...

However my friends house needs work and she doesnt have the best of credit....I just want to do a trial run to see if i can deal living with her and not give up my apt in the event things dont work out....im only doing this for 2 months......is this legal?

  1. It is not illegal to physically reside at both locations...however to the government and such you must provide one primary address.this makes it easier for tax purposes, social security and such.

  2. What is the problem here?  You will not be residing at two places, you will be paying rent for two apartments for 2 months.  Of course this is legal.  You can rent ten places if you want.  You will be residing at one only but so what?  Can you break the lease at your current apartment if you decide to move out?  If so, then fine.

  3. You can have as many houses as you desire, but only one primary residence for tax and voting purposes. Many tax benefits are only for primary residences. And voting ... that's just obvious.

I know a family friend that maintains his parent's home as his primary residence for the school district, but lives miles away in a different town.

  4. You can do it, but you probably could only have one "official" address for social security purposes, etc. I don't think there is anything illegal about having two residences, if you can afford it but for tax purposes, I think only one counts so I guess that would be the one you would be at the most. I don't know for sure.

  5. Yes, you can do that. Your primary residence would be the $700 apartment, and your temporary residence would be the $500 apartment at your friends place. You can file a temporary change of address at the post office that will only last for the couple of months you are there. This way, you can receive your mail at the temporary address, and not have to notify everyone that you have moved.

If you decide to make the new place your primary residence, then you file a permanent change of address at the post office of your old place, and notify everyone of the new address.
